the 2001 display...
2001`s display was about as different to 2000`s as you can get- instead of large bold multicolour bulbs, I used over 4000 miniature bulbs and LEDs in a fully co-ordinated colour scheme. Hand painted icy-blue Icicle lights, green plain sets around the main windows, cascading icicle lights surrounding the front porch and hundreds of plain white lights filling the bushes at the front. Finally, three Light-trees, the effect that proved so popular in 2000, two smaller ones stood alongside the original large one. Those had different colours- red (the small ones) and gold (the big one), all fading together to a cold icy white, then back to red/gold again.

the Simulation picture- click to view full-sizedIn September of 2001 I produced a "computer simulation" picture of what I anticipated the display to look like (the icon to the right). Using Photoshop, and a previous year`s display photo I painted-out the old lights, and painted on where I wanted the new ones to be, one at a time. It took ages but looked rather realistic, and not unlike the finished display! The only major thing I originally planned for, but did not use was a number of Xenon strobe beacons (the bright flashes on the simulation picture). I wanted to have numerous small green strobes on the house and in the bushes, which would twinkle for a few moments whenever someone passed by (triggered by a motion sensor). However this proved to be too expensive so I scaled them back drastically. Just one clear strobe on the peak of the roof and red ones on top of each light-tree, that flashed constantly.

The Webcam made a return, and I took plenty of pictures of all parts of the the display during the day and night. All these plus an archive of shots saved from that Webcam are arranged in the four galleries below....

the only snow we hadAs you can see, this year there is no "snow" gallery unlike last year- this is because unfortunately we had no snow. Actually, that`s not entirely true. There was a small amount of snow that fell overnight and early in the morning of Boxing Day, covering the ground with a slight but attractive white coating. It didn`t last long, and unfortunately as I am not exactly a morning-person, I wasn`t able to take a picture of what remained until about lunch time, and all that did remain was round in the back garden. That picture is accessible through the thumnail on the left. I kept hoping for more throughout the season but alas, the only icicles we saw were those blue lights along the roofline of the house!
